    About

Starting July 5th, murals by Hedy Tjin will brighten up the space surrounding the historic staircase of the Stedelijk Museum. With her expressive style and bright colors, she celebrates the power of connection and solidarity. The works are part of Post/No/Bills, a series showcasing new work by young graphic artists.

For Hedy Tjin, solidarity is a key source of inspiration. Celebrating together, protesting together, commemorating together: it's precisely at these moments that she sees how differences are bridged and how people find common ground. Her work is an ode to these shared experiences: from the exuberant atmosphere of King's Day to commemorating during Keti Koti, from cheering for each country at the World Cup as if it were their own, to protesting on Dam Square. In her paintings, Tjin brings these encounters to life with an energetic visual language. Where others sometimes see division, she shows how diversity can actually connect.

Tjin initially worked in black and white, but over time she began experimenting more with color during her stays in her native Suriname. She alternates between abstraction and figuration, creating layered images that allow for personal interpretation. Her work often stems from everyday, personal experiences, which she translates into images with universal expressiveness. Several of her murals can be found in Amsterdam, including a monumental portrait of Anton de Kom in the Zuidoost district.
