    About

Voices from West Asia and North Africa Poetry holds a significant place in the cultures of West Asia and North Africa. Across various social classes, national borders, and languages, millions of people know and recite poems by heart. The upcoming exhibition, "Poetry of the People," showcases impactful poems from these regions, illustrating how poetry can affect individuals and communities alike. "Poetry of the People" explores the social influence of poetry from the late 19th century to the present day.

The exhibition features over thirty poems, presented through a unique blend of text, readings, video, and art installations. It encompasses poems that convey joy and romance, as well as those that have fueled mass protests. From the personal touch of a poem recited by an individual to the collective power of a text chanted by a crowd, this exhibition brings forth the voices of changemakers, connectors, and freedom fighters. Attendees will gain insights into the creativity, strength, and diversity of poets, performers, and artists from the region. Creativity and Inspiration "Poetry of the People" demonstrates the versatility and creativity inherent in poetry.

The exhibition includes works by notable poets such as Abu al-Qasim al-Shabbi, Dunya Mikhail, Forough Farrokhzad, Mahmoud Darwish, Nazim Hikmet, and Rumi, among others. The poems were originally composed in multiple languages, including Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, Persian, Tamazight, and Turkish.

Visitors will also see how this poetic legacy continues to inspire contemporary artists. For instance, there will be a performance of the poem "Ötme Bülbül Ötme" by singer Meral Polat, along with artworks by Sara Rajaei, the collective Slavs and Tatars, and Nour Jaouda, among others. "Poetry of the People" will be on display starting February 14, 2025. [Source (Original or ML Translation): Wereldmuseum Amsterdam]
