stanley brouwn and serendipity

As someone who's called Amsterdam home for a few years now, I've gotten good at dodging tourists especially when summer rolls around. But, about every month, I brave Museumplein for a wander around the Stedelijk Museum. I find it far more charming than its better known neighbour, the Rijksmuseum (as in, Museum of the Empire, yikes, hard pass). A big reason is that they are full throated about anti-racism in the Dutch art scene as well as society. And that makes it one of my Third Circles.
This week, I headed over to see the stanley brouwn exhibition. But, true to form, I got a bit lost on my way and ended up wandering through some of the permanent collection. What luck (or bonne merde for my French friends)! There are a few rooms in the permanent collection that are definitely worth the trip into the tourist depths. And the stanley brouwn exhibition is an intriguing exploration of distance and size. And and (for my South African friends) the current installation in the experimental projects space is by a Sudanese artist named Ola Hassanain.
